Mondragon Cooperatives Tour 2014

Dates: June 29 to July 5, 2014 (tour is June 30 - July 4)

Cost: $1600 ($1799 after June 1) – This is a significantly discounted price. Deposit of $300 Due May 15. Remaining amount due by June 1, 2014. Translations, transportation, hotel, and most meals included. Airfare not included.

Travel: Arrive at the Bilbao airport the afternoon of June 29 to take a bus to Hotel Mondragon.  Tour is completed on July 4th, make plans to depart Bilbao July 5th. For those who wish to stay a few days after the trip, the running of the bulls in Pamplona (one hour away) will take place beginning July 6.  It is also the time of the World Cup, which should be a very exciting time in Spain.

This is a very intensive seminar on every aspect of the Mondragon experience with respect to worker participation, internal organization, management, new business development, innovation initiatives, services available to coop members, membership requirements, and Mondragon’s humanitarian projects abroad.  For those who wish to stay a few days after the trip, the running of the bulls in Pamplona (one hour away) will take place beginning July 6.  It is also the time of the World Cup, which should be a very exciting time in Spain.      


Itinerary June 30-July 4, 2014

You will learn about the history of regional autonomy in Spain and of the Mondragon cooperatives, visit service and industrial cooperatives, engage the Mondragon Innovation and Knowledge Research Center, receive presentations on careers at Mondragon University including on the new career of Leadership and Entrepreneurial Innovation (LEINN) and TEAM ACADEMY, and attend a reception at the Headquarters of the Mondragon Cooperative Group.

You  will learn about the history and current situation of the Mondragon cooperative experience at Otalara (the Cooperative and Management Training Center), review how Mondragon cooperatives operate internally and how they are organized, understand Mondragon’s health and social welfare system at LAGUN ARO, and visit the Research Center for the Automotive Sector (EDERTEK). 

You will also dialogue with blue collar workers from an industrial coop, receive a presentation from the MUNDUKIDE Foundation (the international NGO of the Mondragon Corporation), learn from the Company Incubation Center (SAIOLAN), visit the port and beach of San Sebastian and the City of Bilbao with its famous Guggenheim Museum, receive presentations on cooperative training and management development, and visit LABORAL KUXTA (the Mondragon Corporation credit union) and GAZTEMPRESA (Laboral Kuxta’s foundation to help young people start cooperatives).

There will be ample opportunity to ask and answer all your questions about this greatest cooperative experience on earth during and at the conclusion of the seminar.

30th of June 2014

10:00 h.  Presentation on Basque Region and autonomias (local autonomous regions and decision making in Spain).

Visit to the Guggenheim Museum of Bilbao.

Visit to the downtown of Bilbao. Eating pintxos (tapas).

15:00 h   Visit to MIK (Mondragon Innovation and Knowledge research centre) at Mondragon University in OÑATI Business School. Presentation of Mondragon University and LEINN (new career in Leadership and Entrepreneurial Innovation) and TEAM ACADEMY.

1st of July 2014

09:30 h.  Reception at the Headquarter of MONDRAGON Cooperative Group, Paseo Arizmendiarrieta 5 (Building LK3), Arrasate-Mondragón.

09:35 h.   MONDRAGON Corporate slide presentation.

10:15 h   Visit to one MONDRAGON’s industrial co-operative: MONDRAGN ASSEMBLY.

11:30 h   Transfer to OTALORA, the Co-operative and Management Training Centre.

Coffee / Tea.

11:45 h   Situating Mondragon in the Basque Country. Presentation covering the History and Current Situation of the Mondragón Co-operative Experience.

13:15 h   Lunch at Otalora.

15:00 h.  How our co-operatives operate internally and how they are organised.

17:00 h.  End of the first day.

Possible visit to HIPER EROSKI Coop. of Arrasate.

2nd of July 2014

09:30 h.  Visit and presentation of LAGUN ARO (our own health and social welfare system).

Coffee / Tea.

11:30 h.  Visit to EDERTEK (Research Center for the Automotive Sector).

13:00 h.   Lunch at Otalora.

14:45 h.  Speaking with two blue collar worker-member of one coop.

16:30 h    End of the second day.

3rd of July 2014

09:30 h   Presentation of MUNDUKIDE, Foundation (N.G.O.) for productive projects in developing countries.

Coffee / Tea.

11:15 h.   The MONDRAGON Corporate Management Model.

13:00 h.   Lunch at Otalora.

15:00 h   Visit to SAIOLAN - Company Incubation Centre (Company promotion).

17:00 h   Visit to the city of Donostia-San Sebastian and dinner in a typical basque cidery.

21:00 h   Come back to Arrasate-Mondragón.

4th of July 2014

09:30h.   Cooperative training and integration system in MONDRAGON.

Coffee/Tea.

11:15 h.  Culture change and management development in MONDRAGON.

13:00 h.   Lunch at Otalora.

15:00 h   Presentation of LABORAL KUTXA (our credit union) and GAZTEMPRESA (foundation of Laboral Kutxa to help to young people to create the business).

17:00 h. End of the seminar.
