SILICON VALLEY RESIDENTS RALLY AGAINST U.S. MILITARY INTERVENTION IN VENEZUELA
On January 4, Silicon Valley residents express outrage and condemnation at President Trump’s military adventure in Venezuela to kidnap President Nicolas Maduro in violation of international law.
San José, CA – Despite polls showing that at least 70 per cent of the American people oppose foreign military interventions and wars of choice, President Donald Trump has carried out an unprovoked attack on the sovereignty of Venezuela and kidnapped its president, Nicholas Maduro and his wife, on the false pretext of cracking down on international drug trafficking and “narco-terrorism.” Available data indicate that Venezuela is not a major source of drug trafficking into the United States, and does not even produce significant amounts of cocaine, let alone fentanyl, and that most drug trafficking takes place via the Pacific Ocean or goes via land through Central America.
President Trump’s own statements reveal that the true objective is to take over Venezuela’s oil and mineral resources, open the country to U.S. companies, and to unilaterally run the country during a “transition period.” Contrary to U.S. government allegations that President Nicolas Maduro is “illegitimate,” the fact remains that he was repeatedly elected in contested elections where international observers have verified the integrity of the electoral process.
For these reasons, local residents want to send a loud message to the Trump Administration and to our Members of Congress that this illegal attempt at regime change is not acceptable. Instead of wasting limited resources on unprovoked military adventures, let us bring the war dollars home for universal health care, housing for all, education for all, public transit, and all human needs.
